Traditional Chinese Medicine>What is Traditional Chinese Medicine? Practitioners of TCM seek to promote or restore health by diagnosing and treating "disharmonies" or imbalances in the Qi, or natural vital energy of the body. Qi is a product of the healthy balance between Yin and Yang, and flows through the meridians or "energy pathways" along the body. If the Qi is out of balance this will manifest in the body as disease. Since healers could not defile the human body in any way during the early years of the medicine (as with autopsies), they needed to develop other ways to diagnose and treat illness in their patients. They came to realize that each human is a microcosm of the world at large. That is, just as there is winter and summer, day and night, cold and heat, wet and dry, inner and outer, cycles of the moon and sun- the same holds for the human body. When these aspects of the body are in harmony, there is balance and good health for a person. They also found that the body and the mind interact. That even though it is impossible to measure thoughts and emotions, they are acknowledged to have a direct effect on physiology- and where there is disharmony with the mind, there are problems with the body also (and vice versa). The strategy of Chinese medicine is to restore harmony. A Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner will use acupuncture, acupressure, massage, herbal remedies, diet therapy, stress reduction techniques, and simple exercises called Tai Qi to regain the delicate balance in the body. They strive to recover and sustain health. Practitioners assess a person's health by feeling pulsations at each wrist, by observing physical characteristics, by checking the tongue, and by asking a series of questions. This information is interpreted in the context of the client's present and past complaints, work and living habits, physical environment, and emotional life. Patterns emerge that that lead to the practitioner's understanding of which specific areas of the body are weak, or out of balance. Diagnosis of these certain patterns of disharmony can lead to specific treatment strategies. The goal of the treatment is to restore and adjust these areas of disharmony. The practitioners at Wellness Through Balance believe that any treatment strategy is only as good as the level of client involvement. Our goal is for you to understand the imbalances that led to your health symptoms, and know exactly how the treatment plan will harmonize and correct those imbalances. Knowledge is power- |
